Meet Laura Murray

Meet Laura Murray in Lakeland, Atlanta and Cleveland this spring!

My artistic aspirations are similar to the Star Trek mission: “Going where no one has gone before”, and I also want to get there at warp speed.
Complexity and speed are not always easy partners. For me, paintstiks perfectly suit both my need for speed, and attraction to complexity, plus serving as the medium for my personally designed stamp designs and techniques. I’m offering two new workshops in 2015 for a fun, and rewarding learning experience.

Can you see how the three squares above the image morph into the collage above? Actually, there are countless variations with, no fail approach to collaging. All the materials are supplied; students need only bring their scissors and sense of adventure.
As a bonus, learn a few basic design principles that can be applied
to any of your projects.

Kaleidoscope Magic – Register today at

Love kaleidoscopes but are daunted by the challenges of precision piecing? No worries; my Kaleiscope Magic workshop provides paintstiks and kaleiscope rubbing plates which allow you to quickly create a series of charming 7” squares in class for future use in quilts, bags, or whatever.

Here’s a work in progress by my husband Jim who continues to hone his paintstik skills.

Jim, my husband, really fell in love with the kaleiscopes, as shown here with our friend Shelley Stokes at the IQF Chicago show. He used his spare time at the show to work on a yard of overlapping kaleiscope rubbings. Upon finishing, Jim signed a corner…just as all artwork should carry the name of its maker.

I’m still thinking how best to use this spectacular fabric. Although, perhaps it should be left alone as a fine example of art cloth.

What’s in the Laura Murray Designs booth?

If your interests lean toward standing out from the crowd, you won’t want to miss our booth, especially since many of our one-of-a-kind goodies are not on the internet. We carry only products which I personally like and use, with strong emphasis on the unique, including:

• Silk batiks, overdyed kimono silks, handpainted Chinese pintuck, handcrafted buttons in polymer clay and resin, handyed ribbons/cording, and more.
• Paintstiks and accessories, along with my stencils, stamps, and instruction books.
• Display of over 30 garment /handbag samples, illustrating our pattern collection by my favorite independent pattern designers.

We provide paintstik demonstrations upon request, and are happy to answer any of your application questions.

Visit for patterns, paintstiks, stencils and stamps, and the Learning Center and Project Center for free technique and project information.
